Definition of a Hub As the Center of a Wheel

Hubs give the axle something around which to turn, facilitating movement.
The term "hub" has a surprising number of definitions, a testament to its usefulness and importance in the English language. And its first definition---as the centerpiece of a wheel---is almost as important to language as the wheel is to technology.
Definition
1. In relation to wheels, Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines "hub" as the central part of a circular object, such as fan, propeller or wheel. It is the central point or housing through which an axle passes to create movement and is the point where the spokes or blades converge. (The centerpiece, the nave.)
Etymology
2. The word "hub" is likely an alteration, over time, of the word "hubbe" or "hob," meaning lump or projection (usually of a protective nature). This protective quality is significant---the hob of a fireplace was a projection in its back or side used to keep food warm but protect it from potentially scorching flames. Hobnails in shoes or boots protected the soles.
History
3. Originally the jargon of wheelwrights, the term "hub" was coined around 1511, but only gained wide usage after the bicycle became popular around the 1820s. Hubs were first utilized in chariots and carriages, consisting of a wooden hub shell, bearings and a fixed axle. The first bicycles were built along similar lines and have not changed much in basic design.
